The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas prides itself on developing unique publications which offer articles, essays and interviews on Bahamian artists and art movements. Each year we produce at least one major catalogue supporting group shows, the National Exhibition and retrospectives of master artists of The Bahamas.
From Columbus to Junkanoo: an overview of Bahamian history through art
This traveling exhibition was initially intended as a showcase of Bahamian talent and history for a Cuban audience as part of the Fiesta Del Fuego in Santiago de Cuba, but eventually the show found its roots back home as the 2016-17 Permanent Exhibition at the NAGB. “From Columbus to Junkanoo” uses the work of Bahamian artists to add life and colour to our history, tracing waves of colonial activity as well as emancipation and independence. We Suffer To Remain
A collaborative exhibition with the British Council, “We Suffer To Remain” is an exploration into just what voices get to speak to the trauma of slavery. Featuring the work of Bahamian artists John Beadle, Sonia Farmer, and Anina Major alongside Scottish artist Graham Fagen, the exhibition gives us the British colonial “amnesia” around the history of slavery, with responses from those living the reality of its aftermath. Thierry Lamare, A Retrospective: love, loss, & life
Thierry Lamare is a French transplant, having lived and worked in The Bahamas for the last 20 years and devoting his passion and art practice to depicting out island life in a way that is sensitive and heartfelt.
