The Blank Canvas: November 30th, Leslie Vanderpool, BIFF and Derek Burrows

Holly Bynoe

On tonight’s "Blank Canvas" we celebrate visual cinematic culture with the Founder and Executive Director of the Bahamas International Film Festival (BIFF), Leslie Vanderpool, who joins us in the studio to speak about the upcoming 13th edition of BIFF.

The festival kicks off in Harbour Island on December 5th and in New Providence on December 8th, with a massive public screening in Rawson Square.  Leslie speaks to the early days of the festival and how it has gained momentum, culminating in this year’s event with 99 films from 26 countries. The closing night event will take place on December 11th at Fort Charlotte.

Also joining the conversation about BIFF and the impact it has had on The Bahamas and Bahamian filmmakers is the local storyteller, folk tale historian, musician and now filmmaker, Derek Burrows, whose film “Before the Trees was Strange” will premiere at BIFF in Rawson Square. The documentary is an assemblage of over 30 years worth of family movies, edited together to relate a journey of race and identity through Derek's desire to unlock a mystery within his family.

NAGB's Blank Canvas airs every Wednesday at 6:30 pm on Guardian Talk Radio, 96.9FM. You can catch the live stream at www.guardiantalkradiocom. Be sure to tune in.
