The Blank Canvas: May 24, 2017 talking Tilting Axis 3 with Heino Schmid and Tessa Whitehead

This week’s “Blank Canvas” hosts part of the Bahamian contingent of delegates who attended the pan-Caribbean conference for art professionals, “Tilting Axis,” hosted this year at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. “Tilting Axis" is a roving conference, conceived by the NAGB’s own Chief Curator, Holly Bynoe (while she was still the publisher of ARC Magazine), and Annalee Davis, Director of the Fresh Milk Art Platform in Barbados.

Having held its first meeting in Barbados, then moved to Miami (hosted by the prestigious Pérez Art Museum Miami now in its third year, “Tilting Axis” has grown into a serious platform for practitioners throughout the region with a goal of negotiating strategic regional and international alliances for the further development of  infrastructure, production and markets for the Caribbean’s visual arts sector. This year’s edition, themed "Curating the Caribbean," saw prestigious curators, museum professionals, academics and cultural workers from within and outside of the region attending to learn more and to start forging meaningful collaborations and networks to bring Caribbean art to other art spaces globally.

Representing The Bahamas were your host and NAGB Director, Amanda Coulson, NAGB Chief Curator Holly Bynoe, and Bahamian artists Blue Curry (currently on a residency in the Cayman Islands), Tessa Whitehead (far right) and Heino Schmid (middle), the latter of whom join Amanda in the studio to discuss the experience.

The "Blank Canvas” is hosted by Amanda Coulson, Director of the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, and airs every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. on Guardian Talk Radio 96.9 FM
