Central Bank 35th Annual Art Exhibition: Open Call!

The Central Bank of The Bahamas (the Bank) is proud to announce the Open/Senior and High School components of the 35th Annual Art Competition and Exhibition to be held from Thursday, 4th October 2018 to 26 October 2018. The objectives of the competition are to identify, recognize, and encourage Bahamian visual artists. 

  • The deadline for submitting applications and entries is no later than Wednesday 19th September, 2018, by 5:00pm. Late entries will NOT be accepted.
  • The Exhibition Opening and Award Presentation will take place on Thursday 4th October, 2018 at 6:00pm.

Guidelines for Open Category 

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
Participants must be citizens of The Bahamas, aged 18 (as of 9 October, 2018) or older, and not registered in a secondary school.
 

THEME
It is expected that contemporary artists of The Bahamas embrace this opportunity to represent the best of what they are currently working on or have created in 2018.

QUANTITY
Each artist must submit one (1) work in one of the following media:
• Sculpture • Drawing •Painting • Print • Collage • Other pictorial presentation.
Submissions should be accompanied by a brief portfolio (printed or electronic).

GUIDELINES

The entries must meet the following requirements:

  1. Each entry must be the authentic work of the participating artist.
  2. Repeat entries will not be accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit original works completed within the year.
  3. Artists must demonstrate individualism, imagination in concept and in skillful use of materials.
  4. Sculptures must be free standing or mounted on appropriate bases.
  5. Paintings and drawings must be properly presented, and may be framed, or the artist may choose to omit framing as a part of the creative process. However, some works, such as color pencil art, must be framed so as to display in the gallery space. All two dimensional works must have screw eyes and hanging wire installed when submitted, and must be able to be hung on the system that is in the Central Bank Gallery.
  6. All work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery space. There are no size restrictions on artwork. However, works deemed too large or cumbersome to hang or to be placed within the Gallery may not be accepted for exhibition. Works improperly prepared for display may be disqualified from the competition.

APPLICATION AND ENTRY SUBMISSION

  1. Entry Forms are available at the Bank or its website (centralbankbahamas.com).
  2. The deadline for submitting applications and entries to The Central Bank of The Bahamas is no later than Wednesday, September 19th, 2018 at 5:00 PM.
  3. Late entries will NOT be accepted.
  4. The Awards Presentation and Grand Opening Ceremony will take place on Thursday, 4th October 2018, at 6 PM.
  5. We propose that all applications and proposals be emailed. Applications may be emailed to artgallery@centralbankbahamas.com, prior to the delivery of the entries.
  6. In addition, a separate digital photograph for each entry should be submitted to the same email address. The three digital images should be in JPG or TIF format, with the file names consisting of the full name of the artist followed by the title of the work and the date of submission.

Guidelines for High School Category:

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION
To qualify, participants must be citizens of The Bahamas, currently enrolled in secondary school or a 2018 graduate, who are not involved in commercial sales of artwork.

THEME
There are no restrictions as to the theme of works to be entered for the competition. However, works reflecting aspects of Bahamian culture and society and of an experimental nature are encouraged, as well as individualism.
 

QUANTITY
Each artist must submit three (3) works in ONLY one of the following media:
• Sculpture • Drawing • Painting • Print • Collage • Other pictorial presentation.
Failure to present the required number of works results in disqualification from the competition and exhibition.
 

GUIDELINES
The entries must meet the following requirements:

  1. Each entry must be the authentic work of the participating artist.
  2. In addition to the single general Application Form, each entry must be accompanied by a separate and completely filled Entry Form.
  3. Repeat entries will not be accepted. Artists are encouraged to submit original works completed within the year.
  4. Artists must demonstrate individualism, imagination in concept and in skillful use of materials.
  5. Sculptures must be free standing or mounted on appropriate bases. There will be no restrictions on size and or material used. However, wood, stone and metal will be preferred. Additionally, the work must be appropriate for placement within the Gallery’s space.
  6. Paintings and drawings must be properly presented, and may be framed, or the artist may choose to omit framing as a part of the creative process. However, some works, such as color pencil art, must be framed so as to display in the gallery space. All two dimensional works must have screw eyes and hanging wire, and must be able to be hung on the system that is in the Central Bank Gallery.
  7. Two-dimensional artworks should be no larger than 30 inches by 40 inches. Works deemed too large or cumbersome to hang may not be accepted for exhibition. Works improperly prepared for display may be disqualified from the competition.

APPLICATION FORMS
Entry Forms are available at the Bank or its website (centralbankbahamas.com). All entries MUST be delivered to The Central Bank of The Bahamas no later than Wednesday, 17th October 2018. Late entries will NOT be accepted. The Grand Opening and Awards Presentation will take place on Thursday, 8th November 2018, at 6 p.m.
