Caribbean Art Initiative is pleased to announce two open calls. The Caribbean Art initiative was established in 2019 as an independent, non-commercial program and network, working to foster the development of the arts and culture across the entire Caribbean region. Raising awareness and promoting a worldwide dialogue remains a central focus and driving force of the initiative. As part of this mission, the residency aims at enabling an artist from the Caribbean Region to pursue their work outside of their local context, thus bringing Caribbean art into an international environment/discourse.

Open Call | 2019 Residency at Residency Unlimited, Brooklyn
Caribbean Art Initiative and Residency Unlimited (RU) are partnering to offer a two-month residency for a Caribbean artist at Residency Unlimited, in Brooklyn, from August to September 2019. The Residency Residency Unlimited (RU) supports the creation, presentation and dissemination of contemporary art through its unique residency program and year-round public programs, facilitated through strategic partnerships with collaborating institutions. Residents benefit from a diverse network of partners, which allows for flexibility, customization and access to a wide range of services and resources including but not limited to studio/workspaces.
The residency includes:
– Studio space
– Weekly studio visits with art professionals (curators, art writers, gallery directors)
– Site visits to New York based artist studios, galleries and museums
– Immersion into a community of international and American artists in residence
– Public programming
– Accommodation
– Support from the Caribbean Art Initiative Team
The Residency will provide participating artists an opportunity to build on their practice while living and working in Brooklyn, New York. Residency Unlimited ensures opportunities for residents, such as networking and becoming involved in the New York art scene. RU fosters customized residency environments for artists and curators in all disciplines and at all stages of practice.
Application Process
We kindly advise you to prepare following information before starting the applications: Please make sure that images do not exceed 72 dpi (low res in jpg format) and the text documents are in a pdf or a word format.
1. A short biography (ca. 350 words)
2. A letter of intent for the residency including your motivation for choosing New York as the residency location. (ca. 500 words)
3. An artistic statement: (ca. 500 words).
a. For visual artists: a short text about the body of work or research you want to do while in residency
b. For curators and writers: a short text about your current research projects and interests and detail your fields of investigations and research.
4. Six (6) to ten (10) images of artworks (label the artwork with the captions: Title_Year_Medium_Size)
Selection and Eligibility
The residency is open to contemporary visual artists and curators working in all disciplines. It is important that all applicants research RU thoroughly before submitting their application so as to be fully aware of the context which they would, if successful, be entering. The selected artist should be able to engage discursively and speculatively with RU’s environment and New York’s wider artistic and cultural context. With this in mind, applicants should submit a project proposal within their application, outlining their specific research interests and intentions for the residency.
Selection Process
To apply for the 2019 residency, please complete the online application until March 31, 2019. The artist will be selected on the basis of their application, and notified in May 2019.

The Residency:
Gaswork residencies are opportunities for an artistic exchange and experimentation, focusing on process-based and artist-led research. Gasworks encourages artists to pursue new research and widen their networks to support the development of their practice.
The residency includes:
– 24-hour access to a fully accessible studio at Gasworks, with other visiting artist and permanent studio holders
– An Open Studio, or similar public presentation
– Accommodation within Gasworks Residencies House
– Travel Card (Zone 1+2) for travel within central London for the duration of the residency
– Administrative, pastoral and curational support from Gasworks (and from the Caribbean Art Initiative Team)
