By Natalie Willis. An interview with Travolta Cooper on his plans for screenings and finding his “true north”. The NAGB free film series is back for fall! From the spooky to winter-heartwarmers, we have got you covered. This week, we chat with Travolta Cooper – yes, that really is his name! – who will be curating this new season of screenings. The premiere opens with the terrifying classic, Rosemary’s Baby (1968) this Thursday October 18th at 7:00pm in Fiona’s Theatre at the NAGB. First, here’s more on the mind selecting these great bits of cinema for us.

The NAGB is proud to partner with Bahamian filmmaker Travolta Cooper and “The Cinemas” for the upcoming season for the NAGB Film Series. Cooper is a filmmaker with documentaries, a digital series, and an upcoming feature narrative film all at work; he is also the producer of the show “The Cinemas,” which is dedicated to the rise of Caribbean Cinema and under which banner he will be curating film with the NAGB.

On Thursday, May 18th at 8 p.m. the NAGB presents “Modern Times,” the last film to feature the Tramp character and the first time Chaplin is heard on film. Even some eighty years later the film resonates with issues that our society continues to face to this day.

On October 27th, the NAGB will showcase American director Les Blank’s 1994 film ‘The Maestro: King of the Cowboy Artists’ starting at 8 pm. 

The NAGB continues our Summer Film Series with an exciting double bill starting at 8 pm on Thursday. We will be showcasing the iconic documentary ‘Always For Pleasure’ and local filmmaker Maria Govan’s “Junkanoo: The Heartbeat of a People.” We look forward to seeing you there.

Film programmer and invited curator of the NAGB summer film series, Francis Litzinger, shares his love for film; from growing up in Toronto to his foray into the industry. This year, through a unique partnership, Litzinger lends his expertise to develop programming riffing off of the NAGB’s exhibitions. Through the end of August, we host five films, which delve into the backbone of classic and contemporary filmmaking.

The second film in the series, Kon-Tiki, by Norwegian filmmakers Rønning & Sandberg, 2012, deals with exploration, the majesty of the ocean, and not letting go of a dream.

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is proud to announce a new ongoing curated film series created specifically for The Bahamas, beginning in June and continuing through out the entire year. NAGB Director Amanda Coulson, Chief Curator Holly Bynoe and Canadian film programmer Francis Litzinger have selected a series of 12 films, five of which will be screened from June to August.
