Tonight’s “Blank Canvas” sees Bahamian artist, Dede Brown (left), in conversation with Dominican-American artist, Joiri Minaya (right), her collaborator on the next NAGB exhibition, “Double Dutch: Re : Encounter.” The NAGB’s Double Dutch series was conceived as a way to bridge our regional divides, by bringing artists from the region and diaspora together to produce provocative bodies of work through collaboration and exchange.
Brown’s work often focuses on depicting emotionally driven thoughts and narratives through portraiture and figurative drawings, paintings and sculpture. More recently, she has begun venturing further into more experimental and conceptual works, investigating topics relating to human behaviour, experience and existence.
Minaya’s work deals with identity, otherness, self-consciousness and displacement. Her work navigates binaries in search of in-betweenness, investigating the female body within constructions of identity, social space and hierarchies.
The artists speak to their collaboration on this project and the intersections they see in their work and practices. They share how their conversations have led to new ideas and affected their approaches to the work, which will be showcased at the artists’ talk and opening reception this Friday, October 13th at 7 p.m., at the NAGB.
