Joining Amanda in the “Blank Canvas” studio this week is a new media artist, David Gumbs, who was born in Saint Martin and, since 2009, has been teaching multimedia, trans-media and motion design at the Visual Arts School in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
David studied at the Visual Arts School in Fort-de-France and majored in interactive multimedia conception at Les Ateliers, L’ENSCI in Paris, France. His work has been shown nationally and internationally, recently including: “Video Islands, Anthology Film Archives” (New York, 2015); Transforming Spaces, The NAGB (2014); Trinidad+Tobago Film Festival (2014); Beep Bop Boop New Media Festival (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, 2014); and The Martinique Biennial, Fort-de-France (2013). He was selected to attend the Davidoff Initiative Residency at the Red Gate in Beijing from April – May, 2016, and exhibited the result of his explorations there in the Jamaica Biennial 2017, at the Montego Bay annex of the National Art Gallery of Jamaica.
David is in The Bahamas as the first artist-in-residence at The Island House, which is committed to providing a platform for the burgeoning art scene in the local community. He has spent his time at TIH creating work that culminated in a dynamic and interactive group show on October 19th, entitled ‘My Dreams Aren’t Your Dreams,’ that tries to reclaim the myth of the Caribbean. His work was shown alongside Bahamian artists Heino Schmid, Averia Wright, Spurgeonique Morley and the show’s curator, Tessa Whitehead, projected their videos onto and throughout the hotel.
