This week on Blank Canvas, Amanda Coulson returns from hiatus to discuss Love, Loss, Life, a retrospective of Thierry Lamare, who joins her in the studio.
The exhibition spans more than 20 years of Lamare’s practice, tracing his evolution from tranquil seascapes to architectural studies, and from delicate watercolours on paper to works on canvas and wooden supports.
French-born but Bahamian at heart, Lamare first visited The Bahamas in 1985 and fell deeply in love—with the islands and with his wife, Joie Brown. After years living between France and The Bahamas, he settled here full-time in 2001. His travels across the archipelago inspired his extraordinary watercolours documenting traditional architecture and the slower rhythms of Out Island life.
Thierry shares insights into his techniques, including his use of driftwood to craft unique frames, and reflects on the spiritual dimensions of his work. He also speaks about his long-time muse, Ophelia of Long Island, whose grace, humour, and steadfastness shaped his paintings for nearly 15 years—and how her passing transformed his art and approach to life.
Tune in Wednesdays at 6:30 pm on Guardian Talk Radio, 96.9 FM.
