“From Columbus to Junkanoo” features work that references historical events in The Bahamas from the 14th century to the present day. The exhibition first opened in Santiago, Cuba in July 2015 as a component of the Bahamian delegation at the Fiesta del Fuego. Showcasing a cohesive collection of historic, contemporary and conceptual artworks, “From Columbus to Junkanoo” guides viewers through an informative and comprehensive timeline, encouraging critical thought about how these events have impacted today’s society.”
“From Columbus to Junkanoo” highlights the growth and divergence of Bahamian art beyond last century. We hope the showcase will challenge perspectives and assumptions and present a comprehensive representation of the different elements of the Bahamian story internally and with the world at large.”
Objective:
Cultural Identity
Growing up in The Bahamas, the question of cultural identity is often one that presents a degree of difficulty as ‘identity’ is not as straightforward in its understanding. This competition will serve as a sounding board for students age 11 to 19 to give an insight on.
Call for submissions
In narrating cultural identity, choose one or more works from the exhibit ‘From Columbus to Junkanoo’ to negate or engage your views.

Who can take part?
The Contest is open to youth between the ages of 11 and 19, living anywhere in The Bahamas.
How can I take part?
1. There is no entrance fee.
2. The entry period will begin at 9am on Monday, November 28, 2016 and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, January 27th, 2017.
3. The competition is divided into three categories: ages 11 to 13, ages 14 to 16 and ages 17 to 19.
4. Only one entry should be submitted per person. Multiple entries from one person will result in disqualification.
5. Poster should not exceed 24” x 30”.
6. Poster entries may be drawn, painted or sketched using pens, pencils, crayons or charcoal, or using oil, acrylic or watercolour paint, as well as mixed media. Digitally created artwork is also permitted. No photographs are allowed.
7. Poster entries may or may not include text.
Prizes
1. Three winning poster designs will be selected by a jury inclusive of the show’s curators in each category.
2. The top three poster designs in all categories will be announced on the website February 3rd, 2017.
3. Winners will also be promoted on NAGB social media and print media.
4. Winners will also receive a Certificate of Recognition, free NAGB membership, free admission to our Mixed Media Art Summer Camp 2017 and a surprise gift bag.
