Lesson plan

Site-Specific Installation

Grades 10-12

Artists don’t always work in studios. In this advanced project, students create temporary installations in specific locations—on campus, in their neighbourhoods, or in natural settings. Inspired by land art and sustainable practices, they’ll think about art’s relationship to place and environment.

What students learn:

  • Site-specific art and installation practices
  • Land art movement and environmental art
  • Sustainable art practices and material sourcing
  • Documentation and presentation of temporary work

Materials needed:

  • Natural and found materials (location-dependent)
  • Cameras or phones for documentation
  • Rope, twigs, wire, rocks (depending on project)
  • Optional: eco-friendly materials

Time: 5-6 class periods (plus documentation time)

Interdisciplinary connections: Environmental Science (ecology, sustainability), Geography (place and space), Philosophy (relationship between art and nature)
