Activating the Senses: Texture

Grades 1-3

Touch, look, create. Students explore visual and tactile texture by collecting materials with different surfaces and arranging them into collages. This hands-on project helps young learners understand that art isn’t just about what we see—it’s about what we feel.

What students learn:

  • Visual vs. tactile texture
  • How artists use texture to create interest
  • Collecting and arranging materials with purpose

Materials needed:

  • Collage materials with varied textures (sandpaper, fabric, foil, corrugated cardboard, yarn, etc.)
  • Cardstock or heavy paper
  • Glue sticks or white glue
  • Scissors

Time: 2 class periods

Interdisciplinary connections: Science (sensory learning), Language Arts (descriptive vocabulary)
