The luminous Gong Li stars in this powerful meditation on gender inequality. Set in China in the 1920s and based on the novel, “Wives and Concubines”, filmmaker Zhang Yimou creates a masterpiece, that is perfectly acted and superbly framed and composed. Though 30 years old, this film speaks as powerfully today as it did in 1991 about the predicament of women in our world.
