Monumental is a short documentary film that combines historical and contemporary Bahamian perspectives on the statue of Christopher Columbus at Government House. The film examines the role of colonial monuments in the modern Bahamian landscape and draws attention to their part in upholding harmful systems of neocolonialism, racism, and white supremacy. Ultimately, Monumental asks us to consider how the past moulds power structures in the present and interrogates not only how but why we choose to represent who we do.
About the director
Ethan Knowles is a Bahamian writer and cultural worker. He holds a BA in Film & Digital Media from the American University of Rome. In 2019, he was selected to participate in the Fresh Milk Writing Residency in Barbados, and he was the 2022 resident writer for Caribbean Linked VI in Aruba. His work has been featured in publications across Europe, North America, and the Caribbean.
Re: Image is a short film series organised by Amaani Hepburn and Letitia Pratt, featuring works that reimagine selfhood and nationhood in conversation with The Nation/The Imaginary. Each film screens on a two-week rotation in the Project Space.
