National access to the country’s National Collection and the museum’s programming is of the highest importance to the NAGB. Given the archipelagic nature of our country this has proven to be a challenge. Thus, the Inter-Island Traveling Exhibition (ITE) was created and implemented to actively engage Family Island residents in the museum’s programming and increase access to the National Collection. The NAGB team works in partnership with Family Island communities to execute the programme in an effective and impactful way.
The ITE is an amalgamation of ongoing community outreach initiatives that the museum has implemented in New Providence including the mural programme, community and student workshops, our ArtWise school outreach programme, and ArTribe, our afterschool art club for teens. These programmes are all open to the public free of charge and accompany the exhibition of artworks from The National Collection, and a curator’s talk and tour. To date the ITE has traveled to Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama and Long Island. For more information, or if you would like to bring the ITE to your island, contact or Community Outreach Officer Zearier Munroe-Wilkinson at [email protected] or 328-5800. ITE Activities
During each ITE the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas’ team conducts a series of free student art workshops. Open to grades 4-12 its aim is to engage students in an immersive and culturally specific art activity. Students will learn about Bahamian artists, and popular art styles and techniques. The focus of the workshops both compliments the exhibition and meets the specific academic needs and capabilities of participating students. Students learn more about the NAGB and participate in discussions on art in The Bahamas. They are given information and tools to better and more frequently engage with the NAGB in meaningful ways.
Whether you are a master artist or illustratively challenged, the community workshop is a night you do not want to miss. Everyone in the community is invited to create an art piece all their own in good company, on a fun night out. The workshop typically takes the form of a Sip ‘N’ Paint and its focus shifts to match the themes and artists explored in the accompanying show. Participants learn more about the works of Bahamian artists, and their styles and techniques. This event is free and open to the public.
These tours are a fun, informative experience for anyone in the community and are hosted under three guided themes: sustainability, history and visual art. Explore techniques utilised by artists in the creation of their work, connect written literary skills with visual narratives in artwork and analyse and discuss concepts and ideas present in the work.
We also offer school tours, which give students and teachers a truly comprehensive experience that goes beyond their visit to the exhibition. They are designed to stimulate curiosity, reinforce and augment curriculum-based learning, engage students in critical dialogue about the works they see, and bridge subjects so that students can experience artwork in its entirety – as a visual expression of historical, mythical, political, social, spiritual and personal narratives.
The National Art Gallery’s mural programme aims to bring artists and communities together in the creation of amazing art. Where there are murals, there is colour, there is a tale, there is memory. Each ITE is accompanied by our mural programme, which brings together local artists, art students and the general community to design and create a public mural under the theme of the exhibition. The finished mural is truly a community effort where people and businesses donate their space, time or funds to ensure the project pays homage to the beauty and strong bonds of their island.
The exhibition opening marks the official launch of the ITE on the island. Speakers both from the NAGB team and the community come together with the public to view and discuss the works on display, and the place and purpose of the arts in their community. Attendees can expect to see notable Bahamian art works with a timely and relatable theme, and experience great company, compelling conversation, and tasty bites and drinks.
Following the opening of the exhibition, the NAGB team hosts a lively discussion with the exhibition curators and community members in fields related to the themes of the exhibition. Participants share insights into the development of the featured exhibition and the role they each play in the development and implementation of the themes in their professional capacity. The talks are concluded with an in-depth tour of the works with a robust Q&A session. It is an engaging night with art and good company.

“I think it’s time for Bahamians to really understand the depth and complexity of their own history. Bahamian culture and identity may not be something that can be articulated in precise ways because it is a prismatic identity. It’s not singular, and we need to understand the complexity of that.”
