Mining Memories

Grades 7-9

What memory would you turn into sculpture? Students choose a significant personal memory and translate it into three-dimensional form, thinking conceptually about how objects, materials, and space can hold meaning.

What students learn:

  • Conceptual art practices
  • Translating abstract ideas into physical form
  • Sculpture techniques and material choices
  • Writing artist statements

Materials needed:

  • Mixed media materials (wire, clay, wood, fabric, found objects, etc.)
  • Hot glue, tape, or other adhesives
  • Cardboard or wooden bases
  • Tools (wire cutters, scissors, craft knives with supervision)

Time: 4-5 class periods

Interdisciplinary connections: Psychology (memory), English Language Arts (narrative, personal essay), Social Studies (oral history)
