Lesson plan
Mixed Media Assemblage: Objects with Memory
Grades 4-6
Students become collectors and storytellers, gathering found objects to build three-dimensional assemblages of their favourite places—real or imagined. This project asks them to think about how everyday materials can hold memory and meaning.
What students learn:
- How artists use assemblage to tell stories
- Selecting and arranging found objects with intention
- Thinking about place, memory, and personal narrative in art
Materials needed:
- Found objects (buttons, fabric scraps, natural materials, small toys, etc.)
- Cardboard or wooden bases
- Hot glue guns (with supervision) or strong craft glue
- Acrylic paint (optional)
- Scissors
Time: 3-4 class periods
Interdisciplinary connections: Social Studies (mapping, sense of place), Environmental Science (found materials, sustainability), Creative writing (narrative and place)
