Mixed Media Assemblage: Objects with Memory

Grades 4-6

Students become collectors and storytellers, gathering found objects to build three-dimensional assemblages of their favourite places—real or imagined. This project asks them to think about how everyday materials can hold memory and meaning.

What students learn:

  • How artists use assemblage to tell stories
  • Selecting and arranging found objects with intention
  • Thinking about place, memory, and personal narrative in art

Materials needed:

  • Found objects (buttons, fabric scraps, natural materials, small toys, etc.)
  • Cardboard or wooden bases
  • Hot glue guns (with supervision) or strong craft glue
  • Acrylic paint (optional)
  • Scissors

Time: 3-4 class periods

Interdisciplinary connections: Social Studies (mapping, sense of place), Environmental Science (found materials, sustainability), Creative writing (narrative and place)
