This evening we have a special Blank Canvas episode out of Kingston, Jamaica!! Taping in the musically historic Creative Sounds Studio on Mountain View Road (also notable as being located next to the Artist-in-Residency programme New Local Space/NLS operated by Deborah Anzinger, whose been a guest on the show!), BC host Amanda Coulson, meets with the Director of The National Art Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ), Veerle Poupeye (far left) and Trinidadian artist/curator/writer Christopher Cozier.
Chris and Amanda were invited to be the international selectors of the next Jamaica Biennial—together with two locals: artist, lecturer and head of the art department at Edna Manley College, Omari Ra and art dealer Suzanne Fredericks—which opens on February 24th, 2017.
Not unlike our “National Exhibition”—currently on show at the NAGB—the biennial is an expansive group show, aiming to show the current development in Jamaican art. Differentiated from the ‘NE8’, the Jamaica Biennial broadens its reach by inviting selected regional artists to participate.
Veerle, Chris, and Amanda have a dynamic conversation around about the history of the NGJ, of the Biennial and the importance of creating cross-national networks that will assist our artists and institutions in reaching far greater audiences.
