Meet artists, Dylan Rapillard and Dede Brown, on this week’s Blank Canvas. Having just returned from a 5-month stint in Switzerland, the former Popopstudios residents join Amanda in the 96.9 studio to speak about their time in Switzerland, returning to The Bahamas, and what kind of perspective the time away has brought to their work.
For almost ten years, Dylan was the lead designer and master printer at the tru-tru Bahamian company Bahama Hand Prints, while Dede is probably best recognised by the general public for her large-scale commission at Lynden Pindling International Airport, of the soaring flamingos in the Domestic and International terminal.
The artists — both born in Freeport, Grand Bahama — shared a studio for many years and married early in 2016 and, while having their own individual practises, also collaborate on many projects, such as the large-scale wall piece and mixed media sculpture “We Are Stardust” supported in the NAGB’s National Exhibition (NE7) in 2014-2015 and another major sculpture at Transforming Spaces this year.
Dede’s latest work will be on view in the upcoming National Exhibition (NE8) opening on December 15th at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas.
NAGB’s Blank Canvas airs every Wednesday at 6:30 pm on Guardian Talk Radio, 96.9FM. You can catch the live stream at www.guardiantalkradiocom. Be sure to tune in.
