ITE Abaco Exhibition Opening

November 26, 2020, 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is happy to present “From Time: Water Has A Perfect Memory” to the Abaco community. This is the second stop for this exhibition, which will travel to at least four Family Islands. This exhibition functions in some ways as a time capsule. Using historical knowledge and these visual interpretations to engage with the country’s past and present and envision a more hopeful future. With colonial works from the 1800s, to the post-independence contemporary practice of the last few decades, “From Time” opens up conversations on slavery and colonialism to examine how that era’s gross accumulation of wealth and the booming industrial era it generated, served as the catalyst for the climate injustice we are now witnessing.

The curators dissect our national identity as it exists now and as it has evolved through time. They also direct your gaze forward to ask how we can envision a better, more hopeful future. “From Time” draws on works from the National Collection to prompt our thoughts on pressing issues of sustainability, environment, evolution and future-building in our beloved Bahamian and Caribbean space. We are challenged to begin to consider the meaning of history and archives on our own terms and to dare to imagine an abundant and inclusive afro-future.

The exhibition “From Time” opens virtually on Thursday, November 26th, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. The opening will be streamed on the NAGB’s YouTube page at https://youtu.be/SiOztuEPWQ4 It will later be added to the NAGB’s website where it will remain on display until January 31st, 2021. Join us for a night of community, artwork and thrilling conversation.
