For more than 30 years, Bahamian painter Sheldon Saint has documented the rhythms of island life. A Small Place presents a selection of his oil and watercolour paintings organised to mirror a walk through The Bahamas, moving across Grand Bahama, Harbour Island, Exuma, and New Providence. Along the way, Saint captures people in the midst of everyday tasks and moments observed with patience and familiarity.
Saint approaches painting with the attentiveness of a poet, searching for scenes in the landscapes around him and waiting for the right light before committing them to canvas. Some works begin with photographs taken with permission; others are painted en plein air. Throughout the exhibition, soft morning light and warm afternoon tones shape compositions grounded in close observation of people and place.
The exhibition takes its title from Jamaica Kincaid’s essay A Small Place, which reflects on the contrast between the visitor’s gaze and local experience. Saint’s paintings enter that conversation by offering a perspective shaped by proximity and lived familiarity. While earlier visual histories of The Bahamas were often shaped by visiting artists and colonial genre scenes, Saint’s work emerges from within the communities he depicts.
His paintings focus on working-class life and the small moments that structure daily experience. The figures in his compositions move through their environments with ease, not as picturesque subjects but as people embedded in the landscapes they inhabit. Through this closeness—to place, light, and community—Saint’s work offers a perspective rooted in lived experience rather than observation from afar.
A Small Place is curated by Letitia Pratt, Associate Curator. Presented in partnership with Pelican Bay Hotel.
