A Sum of Parts

A Sum of Parts amplifies the migratory history of peoples to and within The Bahamas, considering how movement has shaped our collective advancement, survival, and understanding of our landscape. Through a range of artistic practices, the exhibition traces the traditions and knowledge carried across continents and generations, and how they are adapted within Bahamian culture.

The exhibition examines the archipelago’s earliest histories of colonisation and displacement through to later movements like emancipation and labour migration. A Sum of Parts frames migration as an ongoing process of exchange and adaptation, reflecting on how movement, refuge, and opportunity have shaped the archipelago, and how successive waves of migration have contributed, and continue to contribute, to an ever-evolving Bahamian identity.
