An Archipelagic Vision is the first in a series of exhibitions that strives to move beyond Nassau to highlight the artistic genius of our Family islands. Since 2015, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas has brought artworks from the National Collection to various Family Islands through the Inter-Island Travelling Exhibition, but this exhibition series stands alongside the burgeoning and thriving communities on those islands to amplify their visual arts production. Beginning with Grand Bahama, An Archipelagic Vision: Renewal focuses on the work of artists who explore landscape, healing, and reparative care.
An Archipelagic Vision: Renewal includes work from Claudette Dean, Laurie Tuchel, Chantal Bethel, Kenneth Heslop, Jo Morasco, Melanie Darville, and Veronica Dorsett. Each of the seven artists are primarily concerned with nature and the landscape: how to connect with it, how we can heal with it, and the fine line between creation and destruction that it exemplifies. It is natural for the people of Grand Bahama to be concerned with this process – as they are constant witness to the cycle of degradation and renewal as islanders who have contended with the effects of capitalism and the uncontrollable forces of nature.
An Archipelagic Vision is curated by Letitia Pratt, Associate Curator. Presented in partnership with Pelican Bay Hotel.
