Mixed Media Printmaking

Grades 4-6

Printmaking doesn’t require a press. In this lesson, students use everyday objects and natural materials to create prints that connect them to their environment. They’ll experiment, layer, and see how artists like Kendra Frorup turn found materials into powerful imagery.

What students learn:

  • Non-traditional printmaking techniques
  • Experimentation and mark-making
  • Finding inspiration in the natural world
  • Layering and repetition in composition

Materials needed:

  • Found objects for printing (leaves, bottle caps, textured materials, sponges, etc.)
  • Paper (various weights)
  • Tempera or acrylic paint
  • Foam plates or trays (for ink/paint)
  • Brayers or foam rollers (optional)

Time: 3 class periods

Interdisciplinary connections: Science (natural materials, observation), Environmental Studies (sustainability)
