Shapes & Abstraction with Kendal Hanna

Grades 1-3

Young students discover how artists use geometric and organic shapes to create abstract work. Through symmetry exercises and painting, they’ll make their own abstract piece that plays with balance, colour, and form.

What students learn:

  • Using symmetry as a compositional tool
  • Creating abstract art that expresses feeling without representing objects

Materials needed:

  • Paper (at least 8.5″ x 11″)
  • Tempera or acrylic paint
  • Brushes
  • Rulers
  • Pencils

Time: 2-3 class periods
