Textile Design: Fabric Futures

Grades 10-12

Students dive into Afrofuturism and speculative design by creating unconventional textiles that imagine future identities, cultures, and aesthetics. This project blends art, design thinking, and cultural critique.

What students learn:

  • Afrofuturism as artistic movement and cultural framework
  • Textile design as social commentary
  • Experimentation with pattern, material, and concept
  • Presenting design work with artist statements

Materials Needed:

  • Unconventional materials
  • Markers, paint, or dye
  • Stencils or stamps (optional)
  • Collage materials, thread, embellishments
  • Sewing/gluing supplies (optional)

Time: 5-6 class periods

Interdisciplinary Connections: History (Afrofuturism, speculative fiction), Fashion design, Social Studies (representation, cultural identity)
