Textile Design: Fabric Futures
Grades 10-12
Students dive into Afrofuturism and speculative design by creating unconventional textiles that imagine future identities, cultures, and aesthetics. This project blends art, design thinking, and cultural critique.
What students learn:
- Afrofuturism as artistic movement and cultural framework
- Textile design as social commentary
- Experimentation with pattern, material, and concept
- Presenting design work with artist statements
Materials Needed:
- Unconventional materials
- Markers, paint, or dye
- Stencils or stamps (optional)
- Collage materials, thread, embellishments
- Sewing/gluing supplies (optional)
Time: 5-6 class periods
Interdisciplinary Connections: History (Afrofuturism, speculative fiction), Fashion design, Social Studies (representation, cultural identity)
