EN MAS’ opens with From Columbus to Junkanoo

On the evening of Thursday, April 28, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) hosted the opening of three new exhibitions. On the evening, music played and drums beat out, as talented boys and girls from Rhythm N’ Youth, who are often missing in the real national debate, performed to welcome the souls and soles of the living and the dead. The drums reverberated beyond so many of the other instruments.

NAGB hosts Mask Making Workshop at Gambier Primary

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is looking forward to its next outreach initiative – a workshop at Gambier Primary. The workshop is part of the school’s efforts to raise funds for a covering for its assembly area. It will be held at the Gambier Primary Fundraising Fair on May 21, and all members of the public are encouraged to support.

A mélange of culture: Prominent intuitive artist documents heritage

The NAGB was welcomed to Nettica “Nettie” Symonette’s resort and cultural centre, Nettie’s Place of Casuarina, recently to appreciate Symonette’s efforts at sustainability and cultural preservation. Symonette is also one of the country’s most dedicated and prolific self-taught artists. She began painting intuitively in 2009, and she continues to make work at her studio on the Cable Beach property.

Nettie’s Place is a multifaceted operation, boasting a restaurant, hotel, farm and many other marvels. It is Symonette’s hope that the entire site will document the country’s evolution and cultural heritage.
