Mixed Media Art Summer Camp Exhibition

This year, campers explored the art and history of storytelling in The Bahamas and across the Caribbean diaspora. The rich and vibrant history of teaching and entertaining with the spoken word is deeply entrenched in our culture. The creatures that are spawned and the lessons we take with us are a substantial part of our heritage and shape our collective identity. As visual artists we are also storytellers, and the pieces we create are saturated with the journeys we long to share. In the tradition of our collective stories and in the pursuit of their personal stories the campers studied and experimented with a diverse range of art skills, mediums, and techniques. Through hard work and dedication, campers have created amazing artworks in various mediums. It is a pleasure to now showcase this work at the NAGB, the country’s national art museum.  The exhibition will be open for one month August 4th, 2022 and closing on September 4th, 2022.

Each year we are happy to welcome young creatives, ages 5-17, to create and explore with us using the visual arts as a tool for expression and discovery. This year's theme is Eco Art: Mapping Ecology & Imagination. Under this theme campers will learn to practice a wide range of visual art techniques, from printmaking to digital art, as they explore physical and social environmental issues and states of being. In ecology, we study the relationships between organisms and their environment. By studying organisms' interactions with their environment and with each other, ecologists can develop strategies for managing natural resources, protecting biodiversity, and promoting sustainability. Eco-Art: Mapping Ecology & Imagination allows students to explore sustainability and how our natural resources can be used to create artwork. It also gives them the opportunity to investigate the many ways the study of ecology can enrich the environment, promote human well-being, and aid in preserving our natural resources for future generations.   Sustainable systems and processes can maintain or continue to function over time without depleting or damaging their resources. Encouraging students to take a sustainable approach to their interactions with the economy, society, and the environment can prevent waste and overconsumption. We live in an archipelago with beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and geographic features that are unique to The Bahamas’ location. Sustainable practices are key to ensuring our islands remain picturesque, healthy, and livable over time.   This year’s theme encourages students to interact with their natural environment in thoughtful and sustainable ways and aims to create a space where dynamic discussions and innovative ideas are generated and shared.   During camp students will be divided into four age-appropriate groups: 5-7, 8-11, 12-14, and 15-17. Each group will participate in art making activities that incorporate recyclable materials and natural objects. Using select artists as inspiration including Antonius Roberts whose work is on exhibit at the museum, students will create two art pieces weekly.    The Mixed Media Art Summer Camp is an experience designed for fun, learning and discovery.
