Portrait Photography: Framing Identity

Grades 7-9

In this conceptual photography project, students create a series of self-portraits or peer portraits that explore identity, emotion, or a social issue they care about. They’ll learn to think like artists—using composition, lighting, and sequencing to communicate ideas.

What students learn:

  • Conceptual thinking in photography
  • Using photographic series to build meaning
  • Technical basics: composition, lighting, perspective
  • Developing and presenting a cohesive body of work

Materials needed:

  • Cameras (smartphones work great)
  • Photo editing software (free options like Snapseed or Canva)
  • Printer or digital presentation platform
  • Optional: props, fabric, lighting equipment

Time: 4-5 class periods

Interdisciplinary connections: English Language Arts (narrative, sequencing), Social Studies (identity, representation), Technology (digital editing)
