Today on Blank Canvas, NAGB Communications and Development Officer Malika Pryor-Martin fills in for our regular host Amanda Coulson. She is joined by artists Jace McKinney and Steven Schmid, who are two of 33 artists whose work is showcased in the upcoming exhibition “Medium: Practices and Routes of Spirituality and Mysticism,” which is opening on Thursday, December 14th at 6pm.
Jace and Steven explore commonalities in their work and experiences as Bahamian artists living abroad. Discussions center around religion and spirituality, how it informs their practices and the larger role that art plays in nation building. The artists believe that art can be a vessel to solve societal problems and that artists can take the lead in this. In a surprising twist the conversation revealed that both artists were influenced by their brothers, finding them instrumental in sparking their interest in the arts.
