International guests are coming all the way to The Bahamas to appear on “NAGB’s Blank Canvas” … and to check out our art scene.
This week we welcome long-time self-described “art lover” Steve Shane. While owning artworks that surely number in the hundreds, Shane considers himself more an art historian and does not like to be referred to as a “collector.” He feels this diminishes his passion and does not capture why he loves to support artists by purchasing their artwork and sharing his discoveries with friends and colleagues. He refuses, for example, to put any art in storage, preferring to donate excess artwork to museums and hospitals for the viewing pleasure of the general public. Art is made to be seen and shared, not to be hoarded, which is why the word “collector” is anathema to his philosophy.
Shane’s passion for art started in his senior year of high school in a Detroit suburb – all it took was one influential Humanities teacher to change his life forever. Most of his leisure time is spent immersed in the world of contemporary art—visiting galleries, alternative spaces, artists’ studios, art fairs, museums, collectors’ homes and attending and presenting lectures and panel discussions.
