On this week’s Blank Canvas, we expand into the wider creative community by speaking with a group of young poets from the University of The Bahamas (UB). The “Tingum Collective” is a group born from a creative writing class at UB under Assistant Professor Tiffany Austin (third from left), who visits us in the studio with her group to speak about the power of the spoken word.
Ranging from freshmen to seniors, the group represents a broad range of Bahamians, all of whom came to creative writing for different reasons and have extracted a different result, both in the poems they produce and in what they gain for their own personal growth. The guests include, from left to right, Jaime Petty (UB sophomore), Aleah Newbold (UB Freshman), Tristin Arnold (back row, UB Sophomore), Wynona Nicholls (UB Senior), Sara Tilberg (UB Freshman) and Kemeisha Brown (far right; UB Junior).
Each of the guests read a selection of their work and you can hear more by joining them at Hillside House, on Cumberland Street, this Friday evening at 7 p.m.
Blank Canvas airs every Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. on Guardian Talk Radio 96.9 FM
