The young artists at our Mixed Media Art Summer Camp embarked on a creative journey into history, unraveling the mysteries of today and envisioning our tomorrows through art. “Time Travelers: Exploring Our Past, Present & Future” is an anthropological study of the evolution of Bahamian visual arts through significant periods in our history. Each week focused on a different point in our history: the time of the Lucayans, colonialism, post-colonialism/modern times, and potential futures. Our campers journeyed with us as we explored the geography, values, rituals, and economic resources of our communities, and their impact on visual culture.

Campers participated in period-specific experiences and created artwork reminiscent of the time they were exploring, allowing them to add their voice and vision to the communities of both our ancestors and descendants. As we time-traveled to our collective pasts, we explored core anthropological questions about ourselves, using the visual arts to create pieces that explain, dissect, combine, and thrill. For this journey, the campers were dutifully equipped with an arsenal of resources and the knowledge that they have the power to design the future they want to see—one that is full of promise.
